We’ve all heard the old adage before and nowadays it is even more important than ever that we think about this saying in reference to illegal drugs currently out on the market. In the recent events of huge Hollywood stars overdosing, it is so important to look at why and how these drugs, specifically Heroin, are even more dangerous than ever.
As many markets are forever having to change and adapt, the same goes for drug dealers. No matter how dangerous their changes can be on their “customers.” A new wave of heroin is being laced with Fentanyl, an incredibly strong painkiller used in cancer treatment. In doing so, the potency of these drugs are increased so much, regular users are overdosing, even on dosages they regularly take. Elinore F. McCance-Katz, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of SAMHSA, describes the consequences by saying, “Unfortunately this has resulted in the deaths of dozens of people who cannot tolerate it. Within minutes of using this contaminated heroin they lose consciousness, breathe ever more slowly until they finally stop—and die.”
